Ukraine-Russia War: Ukraine Strikes Deep into Russia, Targeting Oil Infrastructure

Fresh military strategies are emerging in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Ukrainian military has shifted its approach and begun striking at the economic foundations of Russia. As part of this strategy, long-range drones launched by Ukraine penetrated deep into Russian territory in record numbers, carrying out devastating attacks. The targeting of oil fields deep inside Russia — well beyond international border zones — is causing significant alarm internationally.

As part of these strategic strikes, Ukrainian drones successfully hit the Tyumen oil refinery in the Urals region, located approximately 2,000 kilometres inside the Ukrainian border. The attack on this plant — one of the largest and most critical private refineries in Russia — has exposed serious failures in Russia’s defensive perimeter. Tyumen regional governor Alexander Moor confirmed that large numbers of emergency personnel were deployed following drone debris falling on the site, and that employees were temporarily evacuated to safe locations as a precautionary measure.

Following this successful strike, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a significant announcement. He proudly revealed that Ukraine’s defence sector has developed state-of-the-art long-range drones using indigenous technology, capable of travelling over 3,000 kilometres without interruption. Through this attack, Ukraine has made clear that its military now possesses the capability to strike any part of Russia — enough to keep the country on edge.

The Tyumen refinery is critically important to Russia’s domestic energy needs, processing approximately 151,000 barrels of crude oil per day and regulating the country’s internal fuel supply. However, Russian officials are claiming that no major damage was caused to the main plant and that only peripheral structures were affected. Ukraine’s objective in these strikes is to economically cripple Russia’s oil sector — the lifeblood of its economy.

Ukraine has dramatically escalated the frequency and intensity of its attacks on Russian oil facilities in recent times. Within the past week alone, Ukraine carried out two consecutive strikes on a heavily secured major refinery in Moscow. The cumulative effect of these relentless attacks is being felt visibly in Russia’s domestic market. Reports indicate that severe fuel shortages have already emerged in several parts of Russia, while petrol and diesel prices have shot up sharply across the country.

With the threat from Ukrainian drones now extending as far as the Ural mountain region, Russia’s defence establishment has been placed on high alert. As part of security measures on Saturday, several key airports in the region were temporarily shut down and flight services cancelled. Drones penetrating this far into Russian territory is being seen as a turning point in the war — through these strikes, Ukraine has sent a clear warning that the conflict is no longer confined to its borders, and that even distant Russian cities are now within reach.
