Tensions in West Asia continue to escalate as the United States and Iran remain locked in a military standoff. Amid the conflict, Iran has threatened to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments, raising concerns over disruptions to international energy supplies. In response, the United States has asserted that commercial shipping through the strategic waterway remains secure and operational.
Speaking at the White House, Donald Trump disclosed details of what he described as a secret military operation aimed at safeguarding oil transportation through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said the US military successfully escorted 22 large oil tankers through the waterway in a single night, with vessels reportedly operating without lights to avoid detection. He further claimed that more than 100 million barrels of oil and over 200 commercial ships have safely transited the route under US protection.
According to Trump, US naval forces have been providing security cover to commercial vessels by escorting them through the strait amid concerns of potential Iranian attacks. The operation was intended to ensure the uninterrupted flow of oil to global markets despite heightened regional tensions. However, shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz remains below normal levels, reflecting the continuing security challenges in one of the world’s most important maritime trade corridors.
