Chennai: DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the newly formed Vijay-led government, claiming that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) administration would not complete its five-year term. Stalin alleged that despite coming to power, the government was currently surviving only because of the “support and mercy” of the DMK.
Addressing party workers, Stalin described the recent Assembly election outcome as a “cinema tsunami” rather than a political wave. He claimed that voters supported Vijay largely due to his popularity as a film star and not because of any political ideology. According to Stalin, people voted emotionally for their favorite actor, but the excitement surrounding the actor-turned-politician would eventually fade. He expressed confidence that the public would ultimately return to the DMK.
The former Chief Minister also questioned the stability of the TVK government, pointing out that the party failed to secure the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. Stalin warned that a government without an independent majority could collapse at any time. He further alleged that there had been attempts to split the AIADMK, though those efforts did not succeed, adding that the political atmosphere in the state remained unstable.
Stalin also recalled that parties such as the Communist parties, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) had initially announced only outside support to the Vijay government before later joining the Cabinet. He stated that the DMK would continue to monitor political developments closely but reiterated that the present government would “definitely not last for five years.”
In the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Vijay-led TVK emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats in the 234-member House, but fell short of the majority mark. Congress, IUML, and VCK had originally contested the April 23 elections as part of the DMK alliance. However, after the results, Congress — which won five seats — withdrew from the DMK bloc and extended support to Vijay. VCK and IUML later followed suit, enabling Vijay to form his first government in Tamil Nadu.
