Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is reportedly implementing a dual political strategy aimed at strengthening both his national and state-level influence through the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election and the Tiruchchi East Assembly bypoll. Political attention has intensified around these two crucial elections, with TVK preparing aggressively to secure victories in both contests. The Tiruchchi East seat fell vacant after Vijay resigned from the constituency following his victory from two seats in the recent general elections.
The Rajya Sabha by-election was necessitated after AIADMK leader C.V. Shanmugam stepped down from his post. According to the schedule, nominations will begin on June 1 and polling will be held on June 18. Since only one Rajya Sabha seat is being contested, the election will follow a majority voting system, requiring support from at least 117 MLAs in the 233-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. TVK currently enjoys the backing of 107 legislators and is expected to secure additional support from Congress, IUML, VCK, CPI(M), and CPI, while reports also suggest possible backing from a dissident faction within the AIADMK.
Speculation continues over TVK’s Rajya Sabha candidate. Vijay was initially believed to be considering Congress leader and close associate Praveen Chakravarty for the post. However, concerns over possible disagreements within the alliance reportedly forced a rethink. Sources indicate that Vijay is now considering fielding either a senior TVK leader or a respected academic and public intellectual with a clean image for the Upper House berth.
The Tiruchchi East by-election has meanwhile become a prestige battle for the ruling TVK. Amid social media speculation that actress Trisha could be fielded to capitalize on celebrity appeal, Vijay is said to have opted for a different strategy by preferring a candidate with a strong administrative reputation. Former IAS officer Sagayam, known in Tamil Nadu for his integrity and anti-corruption image, is reportedly the frontrunner for the seat. If he declines, another retired IAS officer may be considered. Earlier reports suggested Koopa Krishnan could contest from the constituency, but he is now believed to be out of the race after recently receiving a government board appointment.
The opposition DMK is reportedly planning to field former minister and senior leader Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi in a bid to challenge the ruling party. The DMK strategy is expected to rely heavily on the Anbil family’s influence in the Tiruchchi region to counter Vijay’s growing political dominance. While Vijay is aiming to use the Rajya Sabha seat to strengthen his voice in national politics, the ruling party is equally focused on retaining Tiruchchi East to reaffirm its political strength in Tamil Nadu.
