The coalition government in Andhra Pradesh has launched a landmark defence manufacturing initiative in the Rayalaseema region, aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous fighter aircraft production capabilities. The foundation stone for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project was laid on Friday at Puttaparthi by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The prestigious project, estimated at ₹15,803 crore, will be developed across approximately 650 acres of land. Officials said the facility is expected to emerge as a major hub in India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem, placing Rayalaseema on the global defence production map.

The AMCA programme is designed to develop fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The project will be implemented through a collaboration between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), marking a significant step in advancing indigenous defence technology.

Authorities stated that the project will generate large-scale employment opportunities, with an estimated 7,500 direct jobs for engineers, scientists, and technical professionals. In addition, thousands of indirect jobs are expected to be created through ancillary industries, logistics, and supporting services in the region.

The AMCA aircraft will be twin-engine stealth fighter jets equipped with advanced avionics, stealth capabilities, and next-generation weapon systems designed to engage multiple targets simultaneously. The aircraft is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Air Force’s future combat readiness and strategic capabilities.

Globally, fifth-generation fighter technology is currently limited to a few countries, including the United States, Russia, and China. With the launch of this project, India moves closer to joining the select group of nations developing advanced indigenous stealth fighters, reinforcing the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision in the defence sector.
