West Bengal has witnessed a historic political development with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as the state’s first BJP Chief Minister. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape.
Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office to Suvendu Adhikari in the presence of top national leadership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the grand event along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president Nitin Navin, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
The BJP registered a landslide victory in the state with 207 seats, while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats, bringing an end to its 15-year rule in West Bengal. The development marks a significant political realignment in the state.
Suvendu Adhikari also achieved a major electoral milestone by defeating former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur constituency. His victory is being seen as a decisive moment in Bengal politics.
Born on December 15, 1970, in Purba Medinipur district, Adhikari hails from a prominent political family. He completed his higher education from Rabindra Bharati University and belongs to one of the most influential political families in the region with strong grassroots presence.
Adhikari began his political career in 1995 with the Congress party before joining the Trinamool Congress in 1998. He later played a key role in the Nandigram movement, served as MLA, MP, and state minister, before resigning from TMC in 2020 and joining the BJP. In the 2026 elections, he registered a sweeping victory, including a significant win over Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, cementing his position as a key political figure in the state.
