WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has ordered that the term “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) be banned from official government documents and records, directing that the term “Super Intelligence” (SI) be used in its place.
All US government departments and federal agencies are now barred from using “Artificial Intelligence” or “AI” in their official documents, communications and projects. They must use “Super Intelligence” or “SI” instead.
Trump has argued that the word “artificial” fails to capture the immense capabilities and power of the technology. He believes it should be seen not as something merely synthetic, but as a technology with supreme capabilities, and the new name is intended to give it greater prominence.
The proposal to rename AI was first floated by Trump last month. The latest order formally puts it into effect.
The directive has set off widespread debate in international tech circles. While the rest of the world continues to use “AI,” the US administration’s official shift to “SI” marks a notable departure in how the technology is named.
