April 28, 2026, has emerged as a defining milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s technological journey, as Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw jointly laid the foundation stone for Google’s mega AI data centre in Tarluvada, Anandapuram mandal of Visakhapatnam district. The event marks one of the largest foreign direct investment commitments in India’s digital infrastructure sector, with an estimated outlay of ₹1.35 lakh crore (around USD 15 billion).

The project is being developed by Google in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Bharti Airtel, and will span 600 acres across Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts. The facility will be built in three integrated campuses located at Tarluvada, Rambilli, and Adavivaram, forming a high-capacity digital ecosystem designed for artificial intelligence processing, cloud computing, and global data services.

At the core of this development is a 1-gigawatt capacity AI data centre, which is expected to function as a global hub for advanced computing workloads and large-scale data storage. Officials stated that the facility will significantly enhance India’s digital infrastructure while positioning Visakhapatnam as a strategic AI and connectivity hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Beyond infrastructure, one of the most significant impacts of the project lies in employment generation. The initiative is expected to create over 1.88 lakh direct and indirect jobs across multiple sectors. Direct employment will include roles in data engineering, cloud architecture, AI development, cybersecurity, network operations, and facility management. These positions will primarily benefit highly skilled professionals trained in emerging technologies such as machine learning and cloud computing.

In addition to core technical roles, the project is expected to generate a large number of indirect employment opportunities. Construction activity alone will create thousands of jobs for engineers, technicians, electricians, civil workers, and logistics personnel during the development phase. Once operational, the data centre ecosystem will further support jobs in transportation, maintenance services, security, catering, and facility support, thereby boosting the local service economy.

Google has also announced dedicated skill development initiatives aimed at preparing local youth for high-tech roles. Training programs in cloud computing and artificial intelligence will be conducted to bridge the skill gap in the region. Additionally, the company has pledged support for around 10,000 women entrepreneurs through micro-enterprise initiatives, further expanding the socio-economic impact of the project. Officials and industry experts believe that this integrated employment model will transform Visakhapatnam into a major technology-driven employment hub in the coming years.
