A significant development has taken place in Telangana politics, with Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla approving the nomination of Minister A. Azharuddin and Professor Kodandaram to the Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota. The decision was taken after the Governor examined the proposals forwarded by the state government to fill the vacant nominated MLC positions.
With this approval, former India cricket captain and current Minority Welfare Minister Mohammad Azharuddin gains constitutional validity to continue in the state cabinet. As per constitutional provisions, a minister who is not a member of the legislature must secure election to either the Assembly or Council within six months of taking oath, making this nomination crucial for his continuation in office.
Professor Kodandaram, a prominent figure in the Telangana movement and former Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), has also been nominated to the Legislative Council. His inclusion is being seen as a recognition of intellectuals and movement leaders, reflecting the government’s emphasis on providing representation to key voices from the statehood struggle.
Earlier, the nominations had faced legal hurdles after Dasoju Sravan and Kurra Satyanarayana challenged the process in the High Court, alleging irregularities in the rejection of their earlier appointments. The court had issued a stay on the process, leading to prolonged uncertainty. With the judicial impediments now cleared, the Governor has finally given approval, paving the way for their induction into the Legislative Council.
