Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Italy has taken a sensational decision by announcing the cancellation of its defense agreement with Israel. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reportedly made the announcement, directly holding Israel responsible for the ongoing instability and rising tensions in the region.
She expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, strongly opposing the war from the outset. Meloni said the massive loss of innocent lives, especially children, is extremely tragic. She stressed that all nations have a responsibility to maintain peace, adding that “Israel’s actions are contrary to that responsibility.”
The Italian leader also openly criticized decisions taken by former U.S. President Donald Trump. She strongly objected to Trump seeking support from other countries for a potential war against Iran and condemned his controversial remarks about the Pope.
In a sharp statement, the Italian government said that while countries across the world are advocating peace, only the United States and Israel appear to be pursuing a war-driven approach. The remarks have sparked fresh debate across European Union nations, with even traditional allies of Israel reportedly reconsidering their stance amid growing concerns over human rights violations. The move by Italy is being seen as a significant diplomatic challenge for both Israel and the United States.
