The Indian music industry has lost one of its most iconic voices, as legendary “Melody Queen” Asha Bhosle (92) passed away on Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after battling health issues, with hospital sources stating that she was admitted on Saturday due to a chest infection and severe fatigue, and despite receiving advanced medical care, her condition deteriorated; her demise has cast a pall of gloom across the film and music fraternity.
Over a remarkable career spanning nearly eight decades, she recorded more than 12,000 songs in over 20 languages, earning a Guinness World Record, and along with her sister Lata Mangeshkar, played a pivotal role in taking Indian film music to global audiences, showcasing extraordinary versatility across melodies, peppy numbers, ghazals, and devotional songs.
Born in Sangli, Maharashtra, into a distinguished musical family, she was the daughter of Dinanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar, and part of a renowned artistic lineage that includes Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Khadikar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar, all of whom contributed significantly to Indian music and culture.
Asha Bhosle received numerous accolades during her illustrious career, including seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, 17 Maharashtra State Awards, and the prestigious Padma Vibhushan from the Government of India, recognizing her immense contribution to the arts.
She was married twice, first to Ganpatrao Bhosle in 1949, with whom she had three children before their separation in 1960, and later to celebrated composer R. D. Burman in 1980, with whom she created several timeless songs until his death in 1994; her passing has drawn widespread condolences from the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, film personalities, and fans across the country.
