Iran has asserted control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, by approving toll collection for vessels passing through the waterway. The Iranian Parliament’s Security Committee authorized the move, under which oil tankers will be charged up to PKR 18.9 crore (approximately USD 2.3 million) per vessel, according to official media outlet IRIB. The measure includes monitoring traffic, enforcing security, and applying financial regulations, while restricting passage for U.S. and Israeli ships. So far, 26 vessels have reportedly complied with the toll rules.
The U.S. strongly condemned Iran’s decision, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserting that the international community will not recognize Tehran’s unilateral control of the strait. The G7 nations have also criticized the move, demanding the restoration of freedom of navigation for commercial vessels and highlighting the importance of maintaining open international shipping lanes.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, is just 33 kilometers wide at its narrowest point and handles roughly 20 percent of the world’s traded oil. The ongoing conflict in West Asia has already disrupted traffic through the corridor, driving up global oil prices. Iran’s imposition of tolls further underscores the strategic and economic significance of this vital maritime route.
Despite the tolls, Iran is reportedly granting exemptions to several allied nations, including India, China, Russia, and Pakistan. Analysts suggest these exemptions indicate Tehran’s attempt to assert control while preserving key trade relationships in the region, even amid rising tensions and international criticism.
