Amid rising global fuel prices triggered by the escalating conflict in West Asia, the Government of India has moved to strengthen the country’s energy security framework. In a significant step, the Centre has issued a notification directing all oil and gas companies, both in the public and private sectors, to immediately furnish comprehensive data on their stock levels, production capacity, and supply position.
The move comes against the backdrop of intensifying geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which experts warn could severely disrupt global crude supply chains. As India relies heavily on imports from this region, any prolonged conflict may lead to shortages of key fuels such as petrol, diesel, and cooking gas within the country.
In response to these potential risks, the Union Petroleum Ministry has initiated preemptive measures aimed at ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability. The government’s primary objective is to prevent any disruption in supply and protect consumers from the cascading effects of international market volatility.
As part of this strategy, a centralized monitoring mechanism is being established to track fuel availability across the country in real time. This system will help authorities continuously assess stock positions, maintain a balance between demand and supply, and enable quick redistribution of fuel between regions during emergencies.
Under the directive, companies are required to submit detailed information on their reserves, daily production, import volumes, and domestic consumption to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell. The collected data will guide policy decisions and contingency planning, with the broader aim of stabilizing fuel prices, ensuring transparency, and safeguarding the country’s economic stability.
