A sharp war of words has broken out between US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron over the issue of immigration. Trump made sensational remarks claiming that law and order in European countries has completely deteriorated and that unrest has arisen because of Muslim immigrants. He publicly stated that Muslim-origin immigrants were responsible for the recent damage in France and Italy.
Trump strongly advised Macron to close France’s borders immediately, without further delay. He warned that European countries must wake up now and seal their borders completely, and that if criminals disturbing law and order are not sent back, the European continent would come to an end in the days ahead.
Macron condemned Trump’s remarks strongly, dismissing them as a completely foolish argument. He said certain political leaders on the other side of the Atlantic were needlessly invoking France’s name for their own selfish political gains at home, and urged people not to believe such baseless propaganda and false news under any circumstances.
Macron also clarified that some images and videos going viral on social media about the recent protests and violent incidents in France are not genuine, but fake content deliberately created with the help of artificial intelligence. He said no large-scale violent incidents of that kind had taken place in the country. If unrest does occur anywhere, he alleged, it is not Muslim immigrants but a small number of criminals belonging to extreme left-wing groups who are behind the clashes.
The entry of immigrants into developed countries, and its impact on local culture and security, continues to draw differing views. While leaders such as Trump argue for strict border restrictions, European leaders such as Macron describe this as political propaganda and defend their countries’ sovereignty.
