Mojtaba Khamenei’s ascent to Iran’s highest political office has brought intense scrutiny to his personal security arrangements. Central to this is the NOPO force, an elite and highly secretive branch of Iran’s police, known for their black uniforms and advanced weaponry. The unit has gained a reputation as one of the most powerful and clandestine forces in the country.

NOPO, short for Niru-ye Vizhe-ye Pasban-e Velayat or Special Force of Guardians of the Velayat, operates differently from regular police duties. It is tasked exclusively with protecting high-level officials and conducting sensitive operations, including counter-terrorism, guerrilla warfare, and rapid urban assaults. Its training regimen is considered among the toughest in the nation.

The force’s distinctive black attire and full-body masks have earned them the nickname “Black-Clad Force.” Equipped with advanced communication tools and weapons resistant to Western and Israeli technology, NOPO combines physical security with psychological influence, projecting fear and authority both on the streets and to potential adversaries.

Following the February 28 attacks that killed his father, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and injured Mojtaba, the Iranian government has stepped up security measures. NOPO now monitors his residence and movements 24/7, employing drones and cyber-surveillance systems to maintain a high-security perimeter. The unit also serves as a visible symbol of the government’s power and deterrence strategy.
