Mojtaba Khamenei, recently declared the new Supreme Leader of Iran, is reportedly in poor health, raising speculation after he has yet to appear publicly or release any video statement since being named to the post on March 8. His absence has triggered questions about his condition, especially as Iran faces heightened tensions with rival nations, creating uncertainty in the country’s internal politics and on the international stage.
Reports suggest that Mojtaba was seriously injured during the February 28 airstrikes carried out by the United States Armed Forces and Israel Defense Forces that reportedly killed Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The strikes targeted the Supreme Leader’s residential complex in Tehran, where several family members were also reportedly killed.
According to reports, Mojtaba Khamenei sustained severe injuries to his legs, arms and face during the attack. The strike is also believed to have killed his wife and son, adding to the scale of the tragedy that struck the Khamenei family during the assault on the residence.
Although Mojtaba was officially declared Iran’s Supreme Leader on March 8, his absence from public view has fueled speculation about his health. Addressing the issue, Iran’s ambassador to Cyprus, Alireza Salarian, said Mojtaba is currently undergoing treatment in hospital and is not in a condition to address the public due to fractures in his legs and injuries to his face.
Meanwhile, Yousef Pezeshkian, who also serves as a government adviser, said through a Telegram message that Mojtaba had indeed been injured but is currently safe. Iranian state media described him as a “warrior wounded in the Ramadan war,” stating that he is receiving treatment at a secure location after narrowly escaping the attack that reportedly killed several members of his family.
