In a surprising political development, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced his resignation from the post and declared his intention to contest the Rajya Sabha elections. Clarifying speculation that has been circulating over the past two days, Kumar said he has served Bihar with dedication for over two decades and will continue to remain among the people in the future. He made the announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Kumar confirmed that he intends to become a Rajya Sabha member while continuing to support and guide the new Bihar government. He assured the people that he will contribute to the state’s development even after moving to Delhi and will provide political guidance to ensure smooth functioning of the government. His nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections are expected to be filed later today.

In his social media post, Kumar expressed gratitude to the public for their trust and support over the years. He emphasized his long-standing desire to serve in both the Bihar Legislative Assembly and the Parliament, noting that while he has been a member of the state assembly, state legislature, and Lok Sabha, he has never served in the Rajya Sabha. “This election is my opportunity to fulfill that aspiration,” he wrote, highlighting his commitment to Bihar’s progress.

Nitish Kumar, 75, has been sworn in as Bihar CM ten times and has held office continuously since 2015. He cited popular initiatives such as the bicycle scheme and prohibition policy as examples of his public service. His move to the Rajya Sabha marks the final phase of his long political career, allowing him to transition from state politics to a national parliamentary role.

Kumar’s decision also positions him alongside political contemporaries like Lalu Prasad Yadav, who have experience across all four legislative houses—state assembly, state council, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha. By entering the upper house, Kumar achieves similar stature and influence in national politics, while pledging to continue guiding Bihar’s development and supporting the new government in the state.
