A major political development has taken place in the Netherlands, with D66 leader Rob Jetten sworn in as the country’s new Prime Minister. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague in the presence of King Willem-Alexander. Jetten assumed office replacing Dick Schoof, who had held the position for a brief tenure.
At 38, Jetten becomes one of the youngest leaders to assume the Dutch premiership. He represents Democrats 66 (D66) and previously served as Minister for Climate and Energy. During his tenure in the previous government, he drew attention for his policy initiatives focused on environmental sustainability and energy transition.
Jetten has publicly acknowledged that he is gay, making him one of the few senior political leaders in the Netherlands to openly declare his sexual orientation. Ahead of his oath-taking, he posted a message on social media platform X, stating that the government would work with responsibility and courage, and focus on improving governance rather than engaging in blame politics.
The new coalition government comprises Democrats 66, People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). The coalition has identified the refugee crisis as a key priority, particularly after previous governments collapsed over disagreements on asylum policies. The administration is expected to introduce stricter measures, including proposals requiring asylum applications to be processed outside Europe.
On the personal front, Jetten is engaged to Argentine field hockey player Nicolás Keenan. The couple has been in a relationship since 2022 and got engaged during the Paris Olympics in November 2024. Their wedding is reportedly planned for the summer of 2026. Keenan represents Argentina’s national hockey team and also plays for a club in the Netherlands.
