Supreme Court Questions Freebies Ahead of Elections

The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed concern over state governments distributing free schemes ahead of elections, calling the practice a barrier to national development. The remarks came during the hearing of a petition challenging the DMK’s proposal of free electricity in Tamil Nadu ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The bench questioned why governments introduce such schemes just before polls and urged a re-evaluation of policies that hinder progress.

The petition specifically challenged the Stalin government’s plan to provide free electricity to all residents regardless of income. A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice CJI Suryakant examined the matter and voiced displeasure over universal freebies, noting that several states face growing fiscal deficits even while implementing such schemes.

The court observed that providing free electricity without considering financial need constitutes “vote-bank politics” and does not contribute to meaningful development. It stressed that schemes should be targeted toward those genuinely in need, rather than being distributed universally. The bench highlighted that offering free food, electricity, and other benefits indiscriminately could divert funds from essential developmental projects.

The Supreme Court also suggested that instead of universal freebies, governments should focus on employment generation and sustainable welfare initiatives. Notices have been issued to the central government for its response, and the court emphasized that this is a nationwide concern, not limited to Tamil Nadu alone.
