Dharmendra Pradhan, arriving in Parliament for the first time after resigning from the post of Union Education Minister, had a conversation with senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh that has now become a major talking point in the country’s political circles. At a time when opposition parties are attempting to portray his resignation as their victory, Pradhan’s firm response clearly conveyed his confidence and hinted at his upcoming political plans.
All NDA MPs, who had gathered early at the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament on Monday, gave Dharmendra Pradhan a grand welcome. Escorting him inside with honor, they presented him with a traditional cap as a gesture of solidarity. A BJP MP remarked on the occasion that this was perhaps the first time in Indian politics that a Union minister had resigned purely on moral grounds, without facing any personal allegations.
When Congress leader Jairam Ramesh met Pradhan in Parliament, he remarked in a consoling tone, “It happens” — implying that such things occur in politics. Pradhan responded immediately, firmly stating, “Nothing happened.” Not stopping the conversation there, he added, “I am a street fighter, not an AC room activist,” sending a strong message to the opposition.
It is a curious turn of events that Pradhan, who as a student leader had once fought on the streets against paper leaks and endured police beatings, has now, decades later, stepped down taking moral responsibility for failing to root out the persistent flaws within the same examination system. BJP circles recalled the decision of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who resigned taking moral responsibility for a train accident, stating that Pradhan’s action was not a sign of weakness, but rather evidence of the priority he placed on national interest.
As soon as he submitted his resignation, the Bharatiya Janata Party extended its full support to him. Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally visited his residence, while senior leaders such as National President Nitin Naveen and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the revolutionary reforms Pradhan had introduced in the education sector. They maintained that this resignation would not diminish his political standing, and instead described it as a symbol of sacrifice for the party.
As a senior leader from Odisha, Dharmendra Pradhan holds a highly significant history within the party. Following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he served as the in-charge for the Haryana assembly elections, leading the BJP to victory. Prior to that, he had proven his skill overseeing election responsibilities in Uttar Pradesh (2022), Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Karnataka, and his campaigning also played a key role in the BJP forming its first-ever government in West Bengal in May 2026.
Nationwide protests led by opposition parties intensified over the NEET 2026 paper leak and irregularities within the country’s examination system. Pradhan stepped down from his post, taking moral responsibility for being unable to fully eliminate the “leak mafia” within the examination system. Echoing the words of Kabir Das, he stated that he had discharged his responsibility with the utmost sanctity and returned it, and that he was ready to take on any responsibility going forward. While the BJP leadership stood firmly behind Pradhan, the political atmosphere outside Parliament grew heated. Opposition parties, led by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged large-scale protests within the Parliament premises, alleging excessive use of force against students during the nationwide agitation.
Amid these tensions, the Lok Sabha prepared the “Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026,” aimed at strengthening the law against paper leaks, for discussion. With the government going on the offensive against the opposition, politics within the legislature grew highly tense.
Despite stepping down from the Cabinet, Pradhan remains fully confident politically, and analysts believe he could soon be handed campaign responsibilities for one of the upcoming five state assembly elections, or given a highly significant position within the BJP’s organizational structure. Pradhan’s remarks are being seen as a clear signal of his next major role within the party.
