Hyderabad police registered 2,731 cases of drunk driving during special enforcement drives conducted as part of New Year celebrations, despite repeated warnings and awareness campaigns. The checks were carried out intensively from Wednesday night to early Thursday morning across the three major police commissionerates in the city. Of the total cases, 1,198 were booked in the Hyderabad Commissionerate, 928 in the Cyberabad Commissionerate, and 605 in the Rachakonda Commissionerate. Police officials said the vehicles of the offenders were seized and cases were registered under relevant legal provisions.

Ahead of the celebrations, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sajjanar had issued a stern warning, stating that the “Drunk and Drive” checks would function like a *“Chakravyuham,”* leaving no scope for violators to escape. He cautioned that even minimal alcohol consumption could lead to detection and stressed that there were no shortcuts or tricks to evade the checks. Despite the warning, several motorists chose to violate the law and are now facing legal action.

Police said the special drive was conducted to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents during New Year festivities. Officials reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol poses a serious threat not only to the driver but also to other road users, and warned that such surprise checks will continue in the future to maintain road safety.
