E‑commerce giant Amazon has announced layoffs affecting 14,000 employees across multiple divisions, including Cloud Services, Retail, Devices, Advertising, and Grocery. Reports indicate that the majority of job cuts have impacted software engineers, reflecting the company’s ongoing restructuring efforts.
According to WARN filings from Washington, California, New York, and New Jersey, around 4,700 jobs have been eliminated in these states, with approximately 1,800 engineers (40%) among those affected. Analysts suggest that another round of layoffs could occur in January next year, raising employee concerns about job security and workplace uncertainty.
The layoff process has been ongoing since Andy Jassy took over as CEO, with 27,000 employees affected in 2022–23. Jassy has highlighted the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI), advising employees to upgrade their AI skills, and noting that expanding AI capabilities within Amazon may necessitate workforce reductions. Other major tech companies, including TCS, Microsoft, Infosys, and Google, have also announced layoffs this year, as AI adoption continues to reshape the IT industry.
