Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that he has directed the Department of Defense to immediately resume nuclear weapons testing, citing escalating nuclear activities by Russia and China. Trump stated that the United States had modernized its nuclear arsenal during his first term but refrained from conducting tests due to their destructive potential.
“The United States does not have more nuclear weapons than any other country. We achieved this balance during my first term, which included a complete modernization and restoration of our nuclear capabilities,” Trump said. He added that while he had previously avoided authorizing tests because of their devastating impact, current geopolitical developments had left him with no choice.
Posting on X, Trump said the decision was a response to ongoing nuclear tests by Russia and China. “Both nations continue to test nuclear weapons, leaving us with no alternative but to ensure our own readiness. I have instructed the Pentagon to commence testing immediately,” he wrote.
Trump wants to go back to nuclear missile testing “immediately.”

Trump noted that Russia ranks second and China fifth globally in nuclear testing. He pointed to Moscow’s recent trials of two nuclear-capable systems—the 9M730 Burevestnik cruise missile and the Poseidon underwater drone—both designed to carry payloads over long distances. Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly supervised the tests personally.
Condemning the actions, Trump said Russia’s renewed nuclear experiments were “reckless and provocative,” warning that they risk destabilizing global security. The announcement has reignited global debate over nuclear policy and raised concerns about a potential new arms race.
