Hyderabad: Buthengari Madhav Reddy has filed a house motion petition in the Telangana High Court challenging the state government’s G.O. that increased BC reservations in local body elections. The matter was heard by a Chief Justice bench comprising Justice Vijay Sen Reddy and Justice Abhandan Kumar.
Senior advocates Prabhakar and Mayur Reddy represented the petitioners, while AG Sudarshan Reddy appeared virtually for the state. Petitioners argued that raising BC reservations to 42 percent is unconstitutional, noting that the total reservation cap should not exceed 50 percent and questioning the rationale for allotting 42 percent to a single community.

The court noted that issuing a G.O. while a bill on BC reservations is pending with the Governor was improper and suggested that local elections could be postponed if necessary. When asked about the release of election notifications, the State Election Commission’s lawyer stated that the commission is ready to issue them at any time. The court clarified that the petition would continue to be heard even after notifications are issued.
The government requested time to present its opinion, which was scheduled for Monday, leading the court to adjourn the next hearing to October 8. The State Election Commission has indicated that elections for Sarpanch, MPTC, ZPTC, and ZP Chairman posts may be scheduled soon.
The High Court’s remarks have intensified uncertainty among political aspirants, who are preparing nominations based on the 42 percent BC reservation. The government remains committed to conducting local elections under the new reservation framework.
