Guwahati: A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted Assam on Sunday, causing panic among residents. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the epicentre was located near Dhekiajuli. Tremors were felt across several parts of North Bengal and neighbouring Bhutan as well.
Panic-stricken people rushed out of their homes and gathered on the streets as buildings shook. While no casualties or major property damage have been reported so far, minor cracks appeared in a few old structures and some household items were dislodged due to the tremors.
Authorities and disaster response teams were placed on high alert immediately after the quake. Emergency measures were initiated, and residents from vulnerable areas were shifted to safer locations as a precautionary step.
