President Donald Trump has openly acknowledged that the ongoing war with Iran was primarily responsible for the Republican Party’s heavy defeat in the U.S. midterm elections, in which the party lost control of Congress. Trump maintained, however, that the decision to go to war was correct from a national security standpoint and that the action was unavoidable to ensure Tehran does not possess nuclear weapons.
The war has sent petrol prices in the United States soaring to unexpected levels. The prices of essential goods have also risen, placing a severe financial burden on the public. Democrats, who made the issue their principal weapon, secured big victories and captured both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
At a meeting, Trump said he agreed with a social media post by Vice President JD Vance stating that the war was the main reason the party lost the elections. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that, in those circumstances, he could not have taken any other decision as President. He defended the war as inevitable in the national interest, no matter how much damage it had caused.
He expressed confidence, however, that had he himself been on the ballot, the outcome would certainly have been different and the Republican Party would have won decisively. Through these remarks, Trump sought to signal a distinction between the party’s defeat and his own personal appeal. The party’s machinery, it can be said, failed to harness his popularity to help other candidates win.
Trump recalled the immense love and support he received from millions of people at his rallies. “Wonderful love flowed at our rallies. But we failed to turn that love toward our party’s candidates and convert it into votes for them,” he said, voicing his anguish. He expressed the view that opposition to local candidates and the burden of petrol prices led voters to lean toward the Democrats.
