The Telangana Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has approved a proposal to implement 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting held on Monday.

The state government had earlier passed a resolution in the Assembly and forwarded it to the Centre, along with an ordinance sent to the Governor, which remains pending. With no decision yet from the Centre, the Cabinet resolved to stage a large-scale protest in Delhi on August 5. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, along with state ministers, is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union ministers to press the demand. The government is also expected to seek support from the INDIA bloc on this issue.

The Cabinet further decided that local body elections will only be conducted after the BC reservation matter is resolved. The BC Bill remains pending with the Centre, and the High Court’s deadline for finalizing reservations has already lapsed. Ministers have also discussed additional steps, including a protest in Delhi, if the Centre fails to act on the issue.
