The U.S. Geological Survey noted that the quake affected areas near the ocean, similar to the undersea earthquake that struck eastern Indonesia on August 17. That 5.8 magnitude quake injured 29 people, two of them critically, in Central Sulawesi’s Poso district. Experts observed that at least 15 aftershocks followed the Indonesian quake. Authorities are monitoring the Drake Passage region for potential aftershocks and maritime impacts.
