Jakarta: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck eastern Indonesia on Monday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor was centered near the Tanimbar Islands, approximately 177 kilometers west of Tual city, at a depth of 98 kilometers.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) also confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude, ruling out any potential tsunami threat. Despite the intensity of the quake, no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage were received at the time of reporting.
The sudden tremor caused panic among residents, prompting many to evacuate their homes. Indonesia, which lies on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences earthquakes of varying magnitudes.
