An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck the Jammu and Kashmir Valley in the early hours of Monday, sending residents into panic. The tremors were felt at around 5:35 am on February 2, jolting people awake and forcing many to rush out of their homes. According to the National Center for Seismology and the German Research Centre for Geosciences, the epicentre was located in Budgam district at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres.

The impact was strongest in Budgam and nearby areas including Srinagar, Pulwama, Shopian and Charar-e-Sharief. Residents reported that the tremors lasted for several seconds, causing household items to fall and windows to shake. Emergency agencies said no casualties or major property damage had been reported as of initial assessments.
Officials from the State Disaster Management Authority are monitoring the situation and have urged the public to remain calm and avoid rumours. Experts pointed out that Jammu and Kashmir lies in a high-risk seismic zone along the Himalayan belt, where such tremors are relatively frequent, advising residents to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
