Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is witnessing a significant shift with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay emerging as a key contender ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Contesting independently without any alliance, Vijay’s political debut has generated considerable attention, with several pre-poll surveys suggesting that he could play a decisive role in the formation of the next government.
Multiple survey reports indicate that TVK may secure around 20 seats in its first electoral contest, while some projections suggest a stronger performance. Political analysts believe that in the event of a hung assembly, Vijay could emerge as a potential kingmaker, influencing coalition dynamics between the major Dravidian parties.
Reports have also surfaced suggesting behind-the-scenes political engagement, with both the AIADMK and BJP allegedly exploring possibilities of aligning with TVK to strengthen their electoral prospects. However, no official confirmation has been made by any of the parties involved.
Historically, Tamil Nadu politics has remained dominated by the DMK and AIADMK for over five decades, with alternate parties failing to break the bipolar structure. Vijay’s entry from the film industry is being viewed by some analysts as a potential disruptor to this long-standing political pattern, with Axis My India projecting that TVK could win between 98 and 120 seats and secure around 35% vote share.
Meanwhile, the broader “poll of polls” suggests a closely fought contest between DMK and AIADMK alliances, with DMK projected to win 112–129 seats and AIADMK expected to secure 86–103 seats. As most surveys indicate a fractured mandate, Tamil Nadu is heading towards a closely watched electoral verdict, with counting scheduled for May 4 following polling held on April 23 in a single phase.
