Ukraine has once again launched a major offensive against Russia, carrying out lightning drone strikes on the prominent Syzran oil refinery located in Russia’s Samara region. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence officially confirmed that the attacks caused extensive damage to the facility, marking the latest in a series of strikes aimed at crippling Russia’s energy infrastructure amid the ongoing war.
The Syzran refinery, operated by Russian energy major Rosneft, holds strategic importance for Moscow. The facility has the capacity to process approximately 8.5 million metric tonnes of crude oil annually, supplying petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel to the wider Samara region. Officials note that a significant share of fuel dispatched from this refinery has been used to power Russian military vehicles and warplanes deployed in the war against Ukraine.
Following the latest drone assault, oil production and all operations at the refinery have come to a complete standstill, according to Ukrainian defence officials. This is not the first time Ukraine has targeted the facility; the refinery has previously come under attack as part of Kyiv’s broader campaign against Russian oil infrastructure.
Beyond the refinery strike, Ukrainian forces have also intensified attacks on Russia’s transport and logistics networks. Ukrainian military units reported the successful destruction of 10 Russian oil tankers and 4 large ferries operating in the Sea of Azov. According to Ukrainian officials, Russia had been using these tankers to covertly export oil in violation of international sanctions.
The destroyed ferries, officials added, were being deployed by Russia to transport weapons, cargo, and essential logistics supplies to support its military operations. The latest strikes underscore Ukraine’s continued strategy of targeting Russia’s energy and supply chain assets as the war enters its next phase.
