Kyiv: Ukraine has made significant remarks on India’s efforts to help end the Russia-Ukraine war, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha saying that among four ceasefire proposals Kyiv has received, the one put forward by India is the most comprehensive.
Sybiha said the proposals came from India, the United States, Turkey and Egypt. He said Ukraine is prepared to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities and observe a ceasefire in the Black Sea as well, but stressed that the two elements must go together — attacks on power and energy infrastructure, as well as ports, must stop, while ensuring unhindered movement of ships in the Black Sea, particularly grain exports, which forms the core of the proposal.
Turkey and Egypt have also put forward proposals centred on halting hostilities in the Black Sea, believing this would ease the passage of Ukrainian grain exports to other countries. The US proposal, Sybiha said, focused specifically on stopping strikes on energy facilities. Ukraine, however, is not limiting itself to these measures, with Sybiha saying Kyiv is open to considering a full ceasefire along the front line where Russian and Ukrainian forces are engaged in active combat.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently made notable remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in the peace efforts, saying Modi raises the issue of ending the Ukraine war in every meeting and has constructive ideas toward finding a solution acceptable to all parties. The Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, has continued since, claiming thousands of lives, displacing large numbers of people, and causing extensive damage to power infrastructure, homes and other critical facilities.
Amid these developments, India and several other countries continue to push for peace talks to end the conflict, and Ukraine’s remarks on India’s proposal mark another significant development in these ongoing efforts.
