Global demand for India-manufactured defence equipment is witnessing a sharp upswing, with the United Arab Emirates emerging as the latest and most significant prospective buyer of advanced Indian military technology. Amid mounting security concerns across the Gulf region, Dubai is actively pursuing the acquisition of two of India’s most sophisticated defence systems — the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile and the AkashTeer anti-drone platform — with formal bilateral commercial negotiations currently underway between the two nations.
The strategic impetus behind the UAE’s defence outreach stems from the rapidly evolving security dynamics in the Middle East, particularly the sustained tensions among Iran, Israel, and the United States. Abu Dhabi is seeking to comprehensively restructure its defence posture to guard against aerial strikes, drone incursions, and missile threats to critical infrastructure. Equally pressing is the need to reinforce security around the Strait of Hormuz, the vital maritime corridor through which the UAE’s oil exports flow, making robust and diversified defence procurement a matter of national strategic priority.
Central to the proposed acquisition is the BrahMos missile system, jointly developed by India and Russia, which is capable of being deployed across land, sea, and air platforms at supersonic speeds, rendering it one of the most lethal cruise missiles in operational service globally. Defence analysts believe that the UAE’s longstanding and close bilateral relationship with Russia is unlikely to present any technical or diplomatic obstacles to the export process, smoothing the path toward a potential deal.

Complementing the BrahMos interest is the UAE’s pursuit of the AkashTeer air defence system, indigenously developed by Bharat Electronics Limited, which is engineered to swiftly detect and neutralise hostile aircraft and drone threats in active combat scenarios. For a nation already equipped with American-supplied Patriot and THAAD systems, AkashTeer is expected to serve as a powerful additional layer of protection, further strengthening the UAE’s multi-tiered air defence architecture.
If concluded successfully, the agreement would represent a landmark entry for Indian defence technology into the Gulf market and a major validation of India’s growing stature as a credible global arms exporter. The Philippines has already operationalised the BrahMos system following its purchase from India, while Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand have expressed keen interest in similar acquisitions.
