Tensions in West Asia continue to simmer without resolution, with the confrontation between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz marked by both military exchanges and an escalating war of words.
In the latest development, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has alleged that an Iranian missile struck one of its vessels. UAE officials stated that the ship, belonging to the state-run oil company ADNOC, was attacked while transiting the strait. The UAE strongly condemned Iran, accusing it of targeting commercial vessels. ADNOC confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident. The string of attacks on ships in the Hormuz region has raised serious concerns over the safety of international commercial shipping.
Meanwhile, the situation surrounding Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical maritime routes for oil transportation — has grown increasingly complex amid the ongoing conflict. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared that the strait would be reopened only if the United States fully accepts its conditions. The IRGC also disclosed that talks are progressing in a positive atmosphere with Oman regarding the management of the strait. Separately, a missile strike also hit an Abu Dhabi-based ADNOC vessel in the Hormuz region.
IRGC spokesperson Sardar Mohebbi clarified that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would be contingent on specific policies and conditions. He particularly demanded an end to US interference in regional negotiations, stressing that Washington must accept Iran’s demands regarding the strait’s reopening.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary, Mohammad Bagheri, also outlined a set of conditions. These included a halt to US threats and military action against Iran, the withdrawal of naval and air forces participating in operations in the Gulf region, and compensation for damages caused by the hostilities. Tehran further demanded the lifting of sanctions imposed on Iran and the release of Iranian assets frozen abroad.
Nearing an Agreement with Oman
Even as sanctions remain in place, Iran has been pursuing agreements with various countries concerning the movement of commercial vessels through Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that talks with Oman are ongoing, noting that the two countries are close to reaching an agreement on a new shipping policy.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that the current circumstances present the right moment to reach an agreement, while making clear that although Iran is engaging in talks for peace, it will not compromise on the rights of the Iranian people.
He stated that his government relies primarily on the country’s domestic capabilities and its people, emphasizing the need for the government to act with empathy toward its citizens. Pezeshkian further criticized the United States and Israel, accusing them of attempting to unite Persian Gulf nations against Iran. Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, he alleged that the US and Israel are seeking to exploit Iran’s internal challenges to their advantage. As of now, the United States has issued no official response to Iran’s conditions.
