A 21-year-old student from the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G), was discovered deceased in his hostel room, marking the fourth student death at the institute this year, according to police reports. The incident has led to widespread protests among students, who are questioning the effectiveness of the institute’s mental health and welfare support systems.
The deceased, a male student from Uttar Pradesh, has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a postmortem examination. The protests reflect growing concerns over the adequacy of mental health resources available at the prestigious institute.
An IIT-G spokesperson expressed deep sadness over the loss and extended condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones. “We encourage our student community to utilize our support networks,” the spokesperson said.
