President’s Rule Speculation Grows in Tamil Nadu Political Deadlock

Political equations in Tamil Nadu have turned highly volatile after the Assembly election results delivered a fractured mandate with no clear majority to any party. Reports indicate that a proposal from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) seeking support to form a government was firmly rejected by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), with the party leadership stating that the public has mandated them to sit in opposition and that they have no interest in forming a government against the people’s verdict.

Meanwhile, AIADMK has already made its stand clear that it will not extend support to the government formation efforts of actor-turned-politician Vijay-led Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). Vijay, who leads TVK, had met Governor R. V. Arlekar seeking permission to form the government, after which the 16th Assembly was reportedly dissolved with effect from May 5, further intensifying uncertainty over the next government in the state.

TVK, which emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, has secured the support of five Congress MLAs, taking its effective strength to 113. However, the party still falls short of the majority mark and requires at least five more MLAs to stake claim to power. Smaller parties, however, have reportedly refused to extend support, leaving TVK’s path to government formation increasingly difficult.

Adding to the pressure, reports suggest that Governor R. N. Ravi Arlekar has set a deadline for Vijay to demonstrate majority support, failing which Article 356 may be invoked, paving the way for President’s Rule in Tamil Nadu. The development has significantly heightened political tension, with attention now focused on whether TVK can secure the required numbers within the stipulated time.

In a strategic move to prevent poaching of MLAs, TVK has reportedly shifted its 108 legislators to a private resort near Mahabalipuram. With rival parties closely monitoring the situation and alliances still uncertain, the political future of Tamil Nadu remains in suspense as all eyes are on the crucial next few hours.
