Pakistan is currently grappling with a severe economic crisis marked by high inflation, currency depreciation, and shrinking foreign exchange reserves. The worsening financial conditions have significantly impacted the country’s economy, forcing policymakers to explore external support mechanisms to stabilise the situation.
Against this backdrop, Pakistan has positioned itself diplomatically by hosting US–Iran peace talks in Islamabad. Reports suggest that a second round of negotiations is also expected to take place in the Pakistani capital, reflecting Islamabad’s attempt to strengthen its geopolitical relevance amid ongoing regional tensions.
According to diplomatic sources, Pakistan is seeking potential economic assistance from the United States in return for facilitating dialogue between the two countries. Analysts note that Pakistan has historically benefited from similar arrangements during periods of regional instability, particularly in the 1980s and early 2000s, when it received substantial financial support linked to strategic cooperation.
However, experts argue that the current global economic and political environment is less favourable for such transactional diplomacy. Rising debt burdens, declining foreign investment, and reduced foreign exchange reserves have limited Pakistan’s financial flexibility, making it increasingly difficult to rely on short-term external inflows to manage structural economic challenges.
Analysts further caution that Pakistan’s long-standing dependence on geopolitical opportunities for economic relief has not translated into sustainable growth. While there are calls for institutional reforms and stronger economic frameworks, concerns remain over whether diplomatic engagements can be effectively converted into long-term economic partnerships capable of stabilising the country’s financial outlook.
