Heavy rainfall continues to batter several states across the country, with high-altitude mountainous regions bearing the brunt of the destruction. Landslides triggered by the downpours have swept away numerous homes, and the resulting natural disaster has claimed several lives nationwide. The latest such tragedy has struck Nagaland, where relentless rain over the past few days has culminated in a devastating incident.
Mon district was the worst affected, as torrential rain that began in the early hours of the morning triggered massive landslides, resulting in significant loss of life and property. The downpour started around 1 am, accompanied by thunder and lightning, before intensifying further. At approximately 6 am, hillsides in the area gave way without warning, sending debris crashing down onto the Defence Colony and Tizit residential areas in Mon town.
The disaster has so far claimed eight lives, while more than 12 others have sustained serious injuries and been shifted to the local hospital for treatment. Rescue teams have recovered four bodies from beneath collapsed residential structures, reportedly comprising three women and one man. Several more people remain trapped under the debris, and officials have cautioned that the death toll could rise further as search operations continue.
The landslides have caused extensive damage to infrastructure in the affected areas, with around 15 houses reported completely destroyed. Multiple roads have been washed away, disrupting transport connectivity, while power supply to the region has also been knocked out.
Rescue and relief operations are currently underway in Mon district, with authorities working to reach those still trapped and provide aid to affected residents. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed as emergency teams continue their search through the debris.
