India has received relief from the tariffs the United States had planned to impose over oil imports from Russia. US President Donald Trump has clarified that no additional tariffs will be imposed on India and five other countries that purchase crude oil and gas from Russia. He signed a key executive order to this effect, keeping national interests in mind.
The decision is expected to increase oil supply in the international market and bring prices under control, raising the prospect of fuel prices coming down in India as well. Notably, Trump took the decision immediately after reaching an agreement with President Vladimir Putin to import diesel from Russia, aimed at easing the fuel burden in the global market. Under this arrangement, lakhs of tonnes of Russian diesel will be supplied to the international market, including the United States.
Under “The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act 2026,” recently passed by the US Congress, the administration was given the flexibility to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on India and China for buying Russian fuel. India depends on imports for over 88 percent of its total crude oil needs, of which Russia accounts for about 45 percent, or 2.08 million barrels per day. Had the sanctions been enforced, petrol and diesel prices in India would have soared.
However, Washington set the sanctions aside after recognising that blocking Russian supplies amid West Asia tensions and disruptions to transport in the Strait of Hormuz would push prices up further. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made clear that India’s decisions would be guided by its energy security and market availability.
With the latest developments clearing the way for supplies, the burden of fuel prices in India is expected to ease, bringing relief to the common man.
