The rape case involving a junior doctor in Kolkata has generated significant national attention. Initially, allegations suggested that the victim had been subjected to gang rape. However, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is handling the case, has clarified that the victim was not gang-raped. The investigation has determined that Sanjay Roy was the sole perpetrator of the crime. The CBI has announced that the investigation is nearing its conclusion and that charges will soon be filed in court.
Following the incident, the West Bengal police initially conducted the investigation. During this period, there were suspicions of gang rape, leading to criticism of the police for allegedly mishandling the case. In response to these concerns, the Kolkata High Court transferred the case to the CBI. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticized the CBI for not providing updates on the case’s progress.
On August 9, the victim, a postgraduate medical student, was found deceased in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. Initially reported as a suicide by the hospital management, further investigation revealed it to be a rape case. Based on CCTV footage, the police arrested Sanjay Roy, the accused. The CBI has conducted a polygraph test on Roy, who is currently in judicial custody.
