The Central government has turned cautious in the wake of a recent series of developments and is reportedly planning a large-scale overhaul of the Union Cabinet. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to travel to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on Friday, and speculation suggests that changes at the Centre could take place any day after his return on September 1. Political circles anticipate that the changes will not be limited to the cabinet alone, but will also extend to the bureaucracy, gubernatorial transfers, fresh appointments, restructuring of the Union Cabinet, and the formation of the BJP’s parliamentary board.
With an eye on the upcoming assembly elections in 16 states as well as the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP is moving forward with a well-defined strategy. Sources indicate that Prime Minister Modi is keen on replacing over 18 cabinet and junior ministers above the age of 70 with younger leaders. Along with filling the current 12 vacancies, plans are reportedly underway to induct a total of 30 new ministers. The reshuffle is expected to be shaped by factors such as the upcoming assembly elections in five states, adjustments among alliance partners, and a push to prioritise younger leadership. With 12 vacancies currently in the cabinet and several ministers already burdened with additional portfolios, the leadership is looking to bring in new faces to ease this load.
The prospect of a Union Cabinet expansion has raised hopes among Telangana BJP leaders. Strong signals from Delhi suggest that Prime Minister Modi will expand his cabinet in September, and amid this speculation, Telangana leaders are expected to get a definite opportunity this time. Reports suggest that, after being left out of the recently constituted national party committee, the leadership has decided to accommodate Telangana leaders in the Union Cabinet instead, with two berths likely to go to the state. Names doing the rounds in political circles for a Union Cabinet position from Telangana include Eatala Rajender, Dharmapuri Arvind, and Godam Nagesh, with D.K. Aruna and Laxman also likely to be considered.
From Andhra Pradesh, former undivided AP Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy is reportedly being considered for a Governor’s post, while Union Minister Kishan Reddy is expected to be given membership of the party’s parliamentary board. With an eye on forming the government in Telangana by the next assembly elections, the party has reportedly decided to accommodate two more leaders from the state in the cabinet. With Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay already representing Telangana as Union Ministers — one from the Reddy community and one from a Backward Class background — the two additional berths are expected to be decided based on regional and social community representation, though the final names remain uncertain for now. In Andhra Pradesh, there is also speculation that alliance partners may secure cabinet berths, with reports suggesting Jana Sena could be accommodated and Machilipatnam Jana Sena MP Balashowry being tipped as a likely contender.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has already stepped down from his ministerial post, while Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is also said to be preparing to voluntarily step away from the cabinet, reportedly citing his inability to keep pace with the required speed of work. Several other senior leaders are also likely to be dropped from the reshuffle.
With focus firmly on the upcoming assembly elections, regional balance, and adequate representation for alliance partners, the Prime Minister is said to have decided to make way for younger leaders in place of some senior ministers, prioritising those with a track record of swift performance over age. Speculation suggests that ageing leaders are unlikely to retain their cabinet positions, with the Prime Minister instead choosing to induct those seen as more efficient and result-oriented for his reshuffled team.
