A false intelligence assessment generated with the help of artificial intelligence nearly brought the United States and China into a major military confrontation, according to reports. The incident is said to have occurred earlier this year, while the US was engaged in a war with Iran.
The US military received an intelligence report indicating that a Chinese vessel traveling through the Middle East was carrying equipment linked to a nuclear weapons program. American officials were immediately placed on alert and decided to intercept and inspect the ship. Armed troops were readied to board the vessel, and US military aircraft were reportedly already in the air.
Before the operation began, officials reviewed the report a second time and uncovered the error. A military analyst had used an AI chatbot to help prepare the assessment, and the chatbot had misidentified the ship’s cargo. As a result, the report reportedly cited nuclear weapons equipment that did not exist. Officials called off the operation immediately. A person familiar with the matter said the report was entirely wrong and had brought the two countries close to war.
The analyst, who works with US Special Operations Command Pacific, had used the chatbot to examine information about the vessel. The AI is said to have combined publicly available information with classified intelligence from government systems and reached a faulty conclusion. The analyst then compiled the findings into a routine intelligence report and passed it to military officials. Authorities have not disclosed what the ship was actually carrying or where it was headed, and US Central Command did not immediately issue an official response.
The incident comes as the US military rapidly expands its use of AI for reviewing intelligence, identifying targets, managing supply chains, and other tasks. Officials see the technology as a way to analyze vast amounts of data quickly. However, as this case shows, there are growing concerns that officials acting on incorrect AI-generated information could face serious and potentially catastrophic consequences.
