The Telangana Prisons Department, led by Director General Soumya Mishra, released its annual report on Tuesday, detailing the number of inmates and various initiatives undertaken by the department.
The report revealed that 41,138 prisoners were lodged in different jails across the state in 2023. Of these, 2,754 inmates are serving sentences in murder cases, while 1,045 prisoners received free legal aid services.
In cases related to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the report noted that 3,655 men and 94 women are currently serving jail terms. Similarly, 5,999 male prisoners and 312 female prisoners are serving sentences in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases.

The report also highlighted that 30,153 cases involving prisoners are pending trial in various courts across the state. Additionally, 483 prisoners were released from jails, and 303 inmates were granted parole during the year.
The department implemented the e-Mulakat system, facilitating video calls between inmates and their families. Under skill development programs, 2,650 prisoners were trained in various skills, while 12,650 inmates were made literate through special initiatives.
Responding to recent reports about the release of actor Allu Arjun, DG Soumya Mishra clarified that the release was carried out strictly in accordance with legal procedures. “There were no procedural lapses in his release. It was done as per the provisions of the law,” she stated.
