The Congress party has surprised everyone by nominating an unexpected candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election from the MLA quota in Telangana. The party has decided to field senior leader and prominent lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who hails from Rajasthan, as its candidate. An official announcement has been made by the AICC in this regard. This by-election was necessitated by the resignation of KK. Singhvi had previously contested and lost in the Rajya Sabha election for a vacant seat in Himachal Pradesh earlier this year. The Telangana seat became vacant when KK, who had recently joined Congress from BRS, resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership.
Given the high chances of an easy victory, the Congress decided to field Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Telangana. If elected, he will serve as a Rajya Sabha member for the next two years. Since the vacancy arose, many leaders in Telangana had hoped for a chance. Several senior leaders, who missed out on opportunities in the last Assembly and Parliament elections, lobbied with both Chief Minister Revanth and the high command for the seat.
However, unexpectedly, the AICC gave the chance to Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior lawyer and key party leader from Rajasthan, leaving state leaders disappointed. Meanwhile, there is no clarity on whether BRS will field a candidate in this election. If BRS does not contest, Abhishek Manu Singhvi’s election is likely to be unanimous.
