As leading automobile manufacturers move to implement large-scale job cuts, Tata Motors-owned luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover appears set to follow the same path. German automaker Volkswagen has already announced that it will reduce its workforce significantly, stating it plans to lay off approximately 100,000 employees. Reports now indicate that Jaguar Land Rover is also considering a large-scale reduction in staff. According to a report in The Times, the company is expected to cut around 4,000 jobs in Britain over the next two years. The report attributed the move to US tariffs, rising vehicle manufacturing costs, and declining sales.
The report further stated that the company has already informed staff about the impending job cuts and indicated that a formal announcement would be made shortly. The decision is understood to have been taken in line with the company’s financial considerations. It is believed that the move could affect both salaried staff and management teams. Jaguar Land Rover, one of Britain’s largest carmakers, currently provides employment to approximately 34,000 people in the country.
The steep cost of electric vehicle manufacturing, intensifying competition from China, and pressure from international sanctions are understood to be behind the company’s decision. Reports indicate that due to intense competition, the company’s revenue had declined by nearly 10 percent by the end of June this year. Separately, German auto giant Volkswagen has already announced plans to cut 100,000 jobs. The company currently employs around 667,000 people, and has stated that 50,000 positions will be cut in an initial phase, followed by another 50,000 in a subsequent phase, bringing the total to 100,000 job losses.
