The Central Government has taken a major decision to permanently curb the leakage of question papers in competitive examinations held across the country. As part of this effort, the government introduced the Public Examinations (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha. Paper leaks have jeopardized the futures of lakhs of students, with several students even taking their own lives as a result. It is with the intent of preventing such incidents that the Centre introduced this bill.

Under the new law, the government has stated that if any leak or malpractice is detected in a public examination, the investigation must be completed swiftly, within a period of just two months. Additionally, those found guilty of such offences will face a hefty fine of up to Rs 10 crore along with a 10-year prison term.
However, as soon as the bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha, opposition parties raised protests over various issues, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the House. Similar protests continued in the Rajya Sabha as well, leading the Chairman to adjourn that House temporarily too.
