The stunning triumph of the New York Knicks — who etched a brand new record in American basketball history — plunged New York City into deep grief and violence. In the NBA Finals, the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs to claim the championship, ending a long wait of nearly 53 years since 1973. However, the celebrations of fans electrified by this historic victory turned violent past midnight, throwing the city into fear and chaos.

Thousands of fans had gathered in large numbers at the world-famous tourist landmark Times Square to celebrate, when a clash broke out among riotous crowds at the 42nd Street Broadway junction, suddenly erupting into gunfire. As gunshots rang out, people ran through the streets in fear for their lives. A 17-year-old boy was hospitalized with a serious gunshot wound to his leg. According to international media reports, four individuals were stabbed during the clashes, while dozens were injured in stampedes and attacks.

What began as joyous celebrations quickly descended into the hands of rioters, leading to severe destruction. Some individuals, driven into a frenzy, smashed police vehicles and cars parked along the road with baseball bats. Young men climbed atop school buses that had been specially stationed for World Cup matches and not only caused mayhem but also set some vehicles on fire. Rioters hurled stones and other objects at police personnel attempting to restore law and order, leaving 10 police officers seriously injured.

Armed police who rushed to the scene in large numbers acted swiftly, detaining three primary suspects and seizing unlicensed firearms from their possession. A total of 63 people have been arrested so far in connection with the violent incidents, facing multiple serious charges including assault on police officers, illegal possession of weapons, destruction of government property, and breach of public peace. Terrifying visuals from these violent clashes are now going viral across social media.

In the wake of these riots that shook all of America, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has gone on heightened alert. An official Victory Parade is scheduled for this coming Thursday to honor the Knicks for winning the NBA Championship, with millions of people expected to attend. To prevent any untoward incidents, security has been tightened extraordinarily across the city, with additional forces deployed and surveillance maintained across Times Square and surrounding areas.
