Russia Deepens Defence Ties With Taliban Amid Major Regional Power Shift

Russia is expanding its strategic engagement with the Taliban-led administration in Afghanistan, signaling a notable shift in regional geopolitics. During a recent international security conference in Moscow, Russia and the Taliban government reportedly signed a key military-technical cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening defence collaboration between the two sides. The agreement is expected to cover arms transfers, sharing of military technologies, and potential joint defence-related projects.

The development comes after Russia formally became the first country to recognize the Taliban government in July 2025, marking a turning point in its Afghanistan policy. Since then, Moscow and Kabul have steadily deepened diplomatic and security ties, with the latest agreement further consolidating their growing defence partnership. Observers note that this reflects Russia’s broader effort to increase its influence in Central and South Asia through strategic realignments.

Meanwhile, tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan continue to escalate along the border. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban authorities of providing safe haven to Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants involved in cross-border attacks. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also alleged that the Taliban regime is cooperating with India against Pakistan, further intensifying diplomatic friction. These accusations have already led to sporadic armed clashes along border areas.

Amid rising tensions, Russia has offered to play a mediating role between the two countries. During discussions in Moscow, Russian officials engaged with Pakistani representatives and urged both sides to resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels to ensure regional stability. At the same time, Moscow appears to be balancing its growing defence cooperation with the Taliban while maintaining strategic ties with Pakistan. Reports also suggest the possibility of Russia supplying advanced air defence systems such as S-400 and Pantsir to Afghanistan, a development that, if realized, could significantly alter the regional security balance and heighten concerns in Islamabad.
