Major political developments are unfolding in Tamil Nadu after the recent Assembly election results, with intense internal unrest surfacing within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. A strong dissident faction within the BJP-led NDA ally has openly demanded a change in leadership, creating fresh turmoil in the party. The rebellion has emerged at a crucial time when the AIADMK is struggling to recover from another electoral setback.

As many as 36 MLAs, reportedly unhappy with the leadership style of party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, conducted a secret camp at a resort in Puducherry, triggering widespread political speculation. The dissident group is believed to be led by senior party leader and former Rajya Sabha MP C. V. Shanmugam, whose sudden resignation from the Upper House has intensified discussions about a possible power struggle within the party.

Sources indicate that soon after the election results, the rebel faction initiated informal talks with actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam. The dissident MLAs reportedly viewed TVK as a rising political force in Tamil Nadu. However, since the AIADMK remains a constituent of the BJP-led NDA alliance, Vijay’s camp is said to have avoided directly aligning with the rebels. Reports suggest the dissident group sought the Deputy Chief Minister’s post and several key cabinet berths in the proposed arrangement.

Political equations changed rapidly after the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam managed to secure sufficient support to form the government with the backing of alliance partners. With the coalition crossing the majority mark, the Shanmugam-led faction reportedly lost much of its bargaining leverage. Despite this setback, the rebel MLAs are continuing their pressure tactics and have not softened their stand against the current AIADMK leadership.

The rebel MLAs, who returned to Chennai from Puducherry on Friday, are reportedly staying away from mainstream party activities. In an attempt to contain the crisis, Edappadi K. Palaniswami held multiple rounds of closed-door meetings with the dissident legislators at his residence. However, sources suggest the reconciliation talks failed to produce any breakthrough. After meeting EPS, the rebel MLAs regrouped at the residence of C. V. Shanmugam in Chennai’s MRC Nagar area to discuss their next political move.

The rebellion has become a serious challenge for Palaniswami as several influential former ministers are also backing the dissident camp. Leaders including S. P. Velumani, C. Vijayabaskar, M. R. Vijayabaskar, and MLA Leema Rose are reportedly supporting Shanmugam’s stand. The rebels argue that the AIADMK has suffered repeated electoral defeats under EPS’s leadership and insist that a leadership overhaul is necessary to revive the party cadre. With no clarity yet on how Palaniswami plans to respond to the rebels’ demands, political observers believe the next few days could prove crucial for the future of the AIADMK.
